Recap
The Rams (11-2) final District game of the 2021 Season put them up against the visiting Venice Indians (4-8). Venice is fairly new program to FHSAA lacrosse, and they’re still building on their depth and skill. The Rams jumped out to an early 10-1 lead by halftime, and were able to rotate in a lot of underclassmen throughout the game, enroute to their 18-1 victory. The win put Riverivew 5-0 in District 12, and the #1 seed for the upcoming district playoffs.
In addition to leading all players with 6 points (3G/3A), Senior Blake Quigley tied the single-season assist record of 50 assists held by Ethan Schwab (2019) in the 4th quarter when he found Kevin Southerland in front of the net for the Rams 14th goal. Kevin Southerland led all scorers with 4 goals. George Benitez earned some significant playing time and scoured the field for 8 groundballs and 1 takeaway. In addition to his 2 goals, Ken Kaiser had 3 takeaways and 4 groundballs. Kai Hudson’s takeaway in the first half enable him to set the new, single-season record for takeaways with 43, surpassing the previous record holder, Jake Day (2019).
One key notable for Venice, although he gave up 18 goals in the game, it was Senior goalie Stephen Coster’s 24 saves that were remarkable to watch.
HONORED GUESTS
Both teams and the fans were honored to have representatives from the Sarasota School Board and administration at the game. Superintendent Dr. Brennan Asplen, Board member Karen Rose, Principal Erin del Castillo, Assistant Principal Keith Little, and Athletic Directors Rod Dragash and Pete Dombroski. We appreciate their tremendous support and commitment to high school lacrosse.
