Recap
Rams Win on Last Second Goal by Lowther!
The Riverview Rams (10-6, 3-0) Varsity girls hosted the Newsome Wolves (10-3-1) at the Ram Bowl on Monday evening. Coming into the game against Newsome, the Riverview Rams Varsity Girls program had played the Wolves program four times since 2020, losing all four games by an average of over 9 goals. This game would be a different story, as the Rams were able to overcome a 9-7 deficit in the second half and tie up the game on goals by senior Emily Hazlett and a left-handed goal by junior Susan Lowther with 3:09 remaining in regulation to tie the game. With under 2 minutes left in regulation, and Newsome with possesion, Lowther chased down Newsome’s leading scorer, Mia Proctor and was able to force a turnover and takeaway for the Rams. With just 91 seconds remaining in regulation, and possession of the ball, Coach McLeod called a timeout for Riverview to setup one last play. As the clock wound down under 10 seconds, Riverview’s leading scorer (and leading scorer in the Nation), Lowther found her way through triple-team coverage and sniped the final shot past Newsome’s sophomore goalie Macey Clay for the game winning goal, just prior to the final horn sounding, securing Riverview’s first win against Newsome, and a 10-9 victory.
Not enough can be said about the play of Riverview’s senior goalie, Mia Rey. With Newsome winning 65% of the draws, the Wolves’ offense peppered Rey with 21 shots, but she made 12 saves in the game, including 6 critical saves in the 2nd half. Riverview’s scoring was led by Lowther with 6 points (5G/1A) and sophomore Caroline Steinwachs with 2 goals. CC Hackl, Dra Hernandez and Emily Hazlett also scored for the Rams.
Newsome’s scoring was led by juniors Mia Proctor and Gracie Ochoa, each with 4 goals for the Wolves.
Game Winning Goal – #18 Susan Lowther
