Recap

Battle of the Unbeatens! Game-of-the-Week! Gonna be a Four Quarter Battle!

Some will say the titles above are over used cliches, but this game certainly lived up to hype.  This was the fourth matchup between Berkeley Prep (3-1) and the Riverview Rams (4-0) since the Rams’ inaugural season back in 2016.  The Rams have now won 3 out-of-the last 4 contests, winning tonight’s game, 10-9. Both teams came into the game ranked #14 in the FLN State of Florida Rankings for their respective divisions (1A/2A).

Although the Rams jumped out to a quick, 3-0 lead in the first quarter, the rest of the game was a tight contest, with every face-off and groundball being fought after, as if it was the last play of the game.  By the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers had actually tied it up with only 6:40 left in the game, and many in the Ram Bowl were wondering if the game would go into overtime.  A quick win a faceoff for the Rams, and Freshman JC Flemming was able to find Senior Blake Quigley (his third goal of the game) for the game-winner, with only 6:02 remaining.  Offensively, the Rams had seven different players find the back of the net.

Throughout the game, the Rams defensive squad swarmed the Buccaneers players, forcing 9 turnovers and scooping up 31 groundballs.  Senior Midfielder Will Evans had 5 takeaways and 4 groundballs to go along with his 3 points (2G/1A). Senior LSM Tyler Horiuchi had  7 groundballs.  Senior goalie, Chris Johnson had 9 saves, many coming in a barrage of shots in the 2nd half.  Riverview’s “Man-Down” squad also performed well, keeping the Bucs offensive scoreless through 4 minutes of total penalties, extending the Rams “man-down” scoreless streak to 12 straight minutes without giving up a goal.

For Berkeley Prep, Brooks Johnson, Reid Mazzuco and Jack Bono, each were able to record a “hat-trick,” scoring 3 goals apiece.

Founded in 1960, Berkeley Preparatory School is a PreK – Grade 12 co-educational independent, Episcopal-affiliated day school located in Tampa, Florida.  Berkeley Prep play in Division 1A, District 9.
